AWARD FOR SPORTSMAN’S LODGE MEMBER

Amity Lodge No 3193 at their October 2016 meeting provided an invaluable insight into an otherwise unknown Masonic areas and asked various brethren, including WBro Bernard Hope, to give presentations. The lodge, however, had got Bernard along for another reason!

Their main business of the evening was the presentation of the Newby Boocock Award. Their Worshipful Master, Barrie Tudberry, went over the criteria and explained what the committee had been looking for, highlighting the qualities of this year’s winner.

The 2016 winner of the Newby Boocook award went to the well-known Sunderland Mason Bernard Hope, the Provincial Grand Orator. By the applause in the Lodge room he was clearly a very popular winner. Bernard was genuinely shocked and taken aback when his name was announced. He humbly accepted the award and thanked the Amity brethren for the award. Awards like this are very special, as recognition by your peers is a great accolade. Barrie handed over the award and a special limited edition of Famous Grouse Whisky to a well deserving and very popular winner of the 2016 Newby Boocock Award.

Lodge 25th Anniversary Meeting

In 2016 the lodge will celebrate its 25th anniversary.  This may seem a long time away, but it is amazing how time passes by.  The Assistant Secretary, WBro Bernard Hope, is already preparing a presentation for the evening (if required) and would like members in the months/years ahead to share with him any reminiscences or photographs.  This will enable him to produce a PowerPoint presentation.

Payment for Lodge Meals

As an experiment at the April meeting we started collecting meal dues from members and visitors as they entered the main door. This may continue in the future so please have the necessary monies ready.  I will say that it is merely a rumour that as we are Sportsman’s Lodge that the Secretary is fitting a turnstile at the entrance.

 Sportsman’s Dinner

The above event was held on Friday 23rd March 2012 at 7.30 p.m. at Penshaw Masonic Hall, Shiney Row and the guest speaker was Kevin Ball (Bro. Kevin Ball).

After a red and white card ice-breaker (and fund raiser) starter everyone present sat down to the excellent meal which we have come to expect at Penshaw Masonic Hall ending, of course, with the famous Sportsman’s Trifle.

After the meal Kevin spoke at great length about his footballing career and the work he does at the Sunderland academy at present and answered a number of questions (both serious and funny) from members of the audience.

The event ended with the usual multi-prized Sportsman’s Lodge raffle and raised £500.
